A TALE OF TWO REALITIES
a micro-narrative by Mark M. Whelan
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of technology, it was the age of social media anxiety, it was the epoch of vanity, it was the epoch of vacuous entertainment, it was the season of the selfie, it was the season of blaming everyone else, it was the spring of me, it was the winter of us, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going directly to data center heaven to be stored but not forgotten, we were wasting our lives by trying to capture every moment - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest attention seekers insisted on it being received, for better or for worse, in the superlative degree of comparison only, leaving you dear reader in a binary abyss alternating between the virtual and the real.
